The Advantage of Fibreglass Laminate Shingle Roofs

Fibreglass shingles look just like the more traditional asphalt shingles except they have a fibreglass core and a laminate coating. They offer significant advantages over asphalt-core shingles in fire resistance, water protection, weather protection, durability, working life, flexibility, weight, and design, and that’s what we’re going to talk about today.

So, what are the advantages of fibreglass laminate shingles in more detail?

Fire resistance

Fibreglass laminate shingles offer better fire resistance because of the fibreglass core.

Water protection

Fibreglass laminate shingles are made in layers. It’s harder for water to penetrate them, so they offer better protection for the roof deck. This is why boats are made of fibreglass and not asphalt.

Weather protection

The extra laminate layer on top protects the shingle and the roof from high winds, hail, and rain better than traditional asphalt shingles.

Durability, flexibility, and working life

These fibreglass-core shingles last longer and protect the roof better than asphalt- core shingles. The fibreglass makes them light, but strong and flexible.

Since these fibreglass-core shingles don’t have the same thick asphalt base that older shingles have, they are less likely to swell and crack with the changing weather. The newer shingles are lighter, but stronger. Because they’re lighter, they are easier and faster for roofing companies to install and repair.

Design

The laminate layer on top enables the shingle to have all kinds of design looks, and it can even mimic other materials like stone or tile.
